The UK has issued a statement on the ongoing situation in Tigray, Ethiopia.
FCDO Spokesperson:
“We welcome the Government of Ethiopia’s announcement of a humanitarian ceasefire in Tigray and urge all other parties to the conflict to make similar announcements. The violence must now stop and unfettered humanitarian access granted. Eritrean forces should also leave Tigray.
“There remains a major humanitarian crises in Tigray with 5.2m people in need of food and at least 353,000 facing famine conditions. Over two million people are still beyond the reach of aid. All parties to the conflict need to respect international humanitarian law, which clearly specifies the protection of all civilians, and communications channels across Tigray should be urgently reinstated so that the UN and NGOs can safely reach people in need.
“The UK stands ready to work with the Ethiopian government, Tigrayan authorities, the United Nations, and other international partners to expedite the delivery of humanitarian assistance. We have provided 47.7m pounds to the Tigray humanitarian response to date.
“It is crucial that there is a political process for all parties to find a long term resolution to the conflict in Tigray.”
